Apart from the ambassadorial couple and Archbishop Peta, there are no other members of the Order of Malta resident in Kazakhstan, which is why there are no aid organisations run by the Order in the country. Due to the great distances involved, it also makes no sense to initiate aid projects from other neighboring countries. For this reason, Ambassador von Canisius has been building a network of various aid projects for years.

These include:

  • Support for the Sisters of St. Mother Theresa
  • Medication assistance: procurement of difficult-to-obtain special medications
    from abroad.
  • Support in the form of financing and the transport of building materials from Austria for the construction of a Catholic church in Almaty.
  • The construction of the largest cathedral in Central Asia, which was consecrated by H.E. Cardinal Sodano in 2012, was made possible by fundraising and the provision of volunteers.
  • In northern Kazakhstan, the St. Lorenz school complex, which is run by Austrian Franciscans, is the only Catholic school in the country. Ambassador von Canisus has enabled many graduating classes to spend a summer in Austria (currently not possible due to political circumstances). Much-needed windows and further renovations were carried out thanks to the donations generated by Ambassador von Canisius.
